Introduction by Luke Beardon

This is an emotive chapter that outlines the very real issues that some individuals will face in education, especially when their autism is either not recognised and/or not supported. The fact that Tony has emerged from negative experiences to continue into adulthood with a new venture of self-employment is testament to what can be achieved with the appropriate support mechanisms in place.

Employment can be a tough environment for anyone, and there are clearly additional difficulties that many autistic individuals may face. Being self-employed can be a fabulous alternative for some people on the spectrum, as indicated in this chapter. Being one’s own ‘boss’ without having to engage with colleagues can be extremely rewarding; as noted within the chapter, though, there are also aspects of being self-employed that can be a challenge. It’s refreshing to read a chapter such as this that, in the main, articulates major problems for the individual – and yet, ultimately, is seen as culminating in a positive. This is a great example of the resilience that can be found in an individual – not an uncommon characteristic to be found amongst those on the spectrum!
